An Egyptian Blue-Green Faience Lion AmuletCULTURE / REGION OF ORIGIN: Egypt DATE:  Late Period to Ptolemaic Period, 664 BC – 30 BC DIMENSIONS:   2.6 cm (1.02in.) long, 1.5 cm (0.59 in.) tall DESCRIPTION: Intact. A superb Egyptian faience uninscribed lion amulet set on an integral rectangular plaque. The animal’s forepaws are depicted in detail to either side of the prominent head with its deeply inset facial features and large mane, which has been indicated with raised chevrons and added black. Further shallow chevron patterns indicate fur on the well-defined body. The tail is shown curled over the right haunch. The base is uninscribed and is pierced, as is typical of this type, horizontally for suspension or attachment. The surfaces retain strong blue-green colors with only minimal encrustation in a few recessed areas. The amulet is secured to the wooden cube base with brass wire that runs through the stringing hole and through the wood block to the underside.PROVENANCE: Formerly in the private teaching collection of Professor Jack Martin Balcer (1936-2004). Professor Balcer taught at Ohio State University for over 30 years. Known as “Dr. B” by generations of students, Balcer's research focused principally on the Athenian Empire, Greek numismatics and the cultural interactions between Greeks and non-Greeks in Western Asia Minor. He published many monographs and articles on these topics and was awarded research grants by the American Numismatic Society and Harvard’s Center for Hellenic Studies, among others. His vast photographic archive of ancient Greek coins, artifacts and archaeological sites in the eastern Mediterranean is today held by the library of OSU, ColumbusCOMPARISONS: For the type, see Animals in Ancient Art, Leo Mildenberg Collection, part III. p. 111, no. 168.  Also, see Carol Andrews, Amulets of Ancient Egypt, pages 64-66 for a discussion of lion amulets and in a variety of formats and materials. Contact Clio Ancient Art and Antiquities at this e-mail address [email protected] if you are interested in purchasing this item.

CULTURE / REGION OF ORIGIN: Roman Empire; Italy or Eastern Mediterranean. DATE: First half of the 1st Century AD DIMENSIONS: 10.2 cm (4 in.) tall Roman unguentarium of amber-yellow glass with opaque milk-white trailing that has been marvered flush with the vessel's surface. The vessel's body is spherical with a slightly concave flattened base without a pontil mark, a tubular neck tapering towards the top, and a rim that folds outward and has been rounded and thickened at the edge. From the base to the rim runs a white spiral trail that makes multiple revolutions and has been dragged up and down six or seven times to create a festoon pattern. The vessel has been expertly reassembled from a few large fragments; very stable and otherwise intact. PROVENANCE: Formerly in a Welsh private collection formed between the 1970s and 2008. PUBLISHED: Bonhams, London, ANTIQUITIES, 29 April, 2009, Lot #302, listed and illustrated on Page 174. SPECIAL NOTES: Most early Roman blown glass vessels, such as this example, have pear shaped bodies and continue to use the strong color contrasts of earlier core formed glass. As blown glass became more common and cheaper these strong colors were replaced by simple clear glass, of which many examples are available on our website. COMPARISONS: E. Marianne Stern, Roman, Byzantine and Early Medieval Glass, 10 BCE-700 CE, Ernesto Wolf Collection, 2001, Cat. Numbers 2, 3 & 4 for closely related examples. Also, Yael Israeli, Wonders of Ancient Glass at the Israel Museum, Jerusalem, 1998, page 26 for several related examples. CULTURE / REGION OF ORIGIN: Cyprus. DATE: 7th Century BC (Iron Age, Cypro-Archaic Period) DIMENSIONS: 8 cm (3.1 in.) tall, 18.5 cm (7.2 in.) wide at the handles DESCRIPTION: Intact. A large ceramic Cypriot bowl in typical black on red ware of the Cypro-Archaic period. The vessel has a deep shape with broad mouth and rests on a well formed flat base. There are two small handles at either side, each rising very steeply to just below the rim and with a vertically placed slit opening, probably for suspension. On one side of the interior are a group of small black smudges, possibly the potter's fingerprints. The bowl is covered all over with a bright orange-red slip that was originally polished, with details in added black. These include a band covering the upper side of the handles and continuing down to meet with a pair of broad bands encircling the vessel's exterior mid-section. A thin band covers the interior lip of the bowl and the interior center is decorated with an arrangement of two thick bands with five narrow bands between and a single broad band with a small circle at center in the bottom. Some rubbing to the slip on the exterior and bits of lime encrustation on the interior. PROVENANCE: Property from an English deceased estate. Ex Bonhams, London. COMPARISONS: Typical of Cypro-Phoenician shapes of this period but definitely a local product. For a good review of Cypro-Phoenician pottery types, see Glenn E. Markoe, Phoenicians, The British Museum Press, 2000, pages 160-16 Contact Clio Ancient Art and Antiquities at this e-mail address [email protected] if you are interested in purchasing this item.
